The images are taken from scans of the newspapers which featured the cartoons. The original ink-drawn cartoon was pasted into a newspaper page layout then sent to a printer and photographically reproduced. This resulted in loss of the original artwork.

During 1976-77, as co-editor of The Scroll with Tom Heineman, I alternated writing editorials with him. The cartoons noted below also contain my accompanying editorials. More information can be found here.

The Swami Series, 1975-76

Most of the editorials I wrote were typical of high school journalism (subjects covering homecoming, extracurricular activities, current news, etc.). Reading these thirty five years after the fact, I was somewhat taken aback at how negative I was initially (in the interst of "telling it like it is"). I got criticism from a variety of sources, and it didn't take long to realize that my role as editor was to provide a positive, upbeat face for the school. I gave up my cynicism and began writing generic editorials (usually suggested by the faculty advisor) in an effort to discharge my editorial duty.

The exception was a series of editorials I wrote featuring a sardonic, banana peel-smoking swami. He was conceived of as a character who could say the dark things I couldn't as editor. The editorials were written in a narrative style in which the characters espouse various sides of an issue (the swami functioning like Socrates in Plato's writings). Meanwhile, I appeared as myself aping the politically correct point of view expected of me. Despite his existential utterances, the swami proved to be a favorite among readers. Perhaps this was because he was presented alongside the positive view, and I tried not to let him overwhelm the imaginary argument no matter how much I agreed with him.

Even if you skip the other editorials, I do recommend you check out the following swami-themed pieces:
