LOWLY SOPHOMORES
March 31, 1977

Editorial

It is not often that we, as editors of the Scroll, find ourselves in a position of defending the school board. It has come to our attention, however, that the school board has been receiving undue criticism about their new proposal, which is almost assured of quick passage, that sophomores and juniors make up the snow days they missed this past winter. According to the plan, seniors will graduate at their regularly scheduled time, since it would be impossible to reschedule graduation ceremonies for many schools, while underclassmen remain in school an extra week in June, a full two weeks longer than seniors.

In answer to all those students who will inevitably complain about the extended school year, we must answer that the purpose of school is, after all, to receive an education, and this education should remain unimpared due to adverse weather conditions. We believe that the members of the school board have come up with the only practical solution to the problem of getting a full education. Many students missed valuable education days this past year. The information contained in these classes will no longer be available once the student has graduated from that particular course in which he is enrolled. Surely no one can complain about getting a full education?

Having already received more years of education than the underclassmen, seniors are obviously in no need of further study. Most seniors are looking forward to getting out of high school so they can pursue a career or college, and an extra week of school would only impair their plans. The sophomores and juniors should not gripe about having one week of summer vacation taken fro them; they should, instead, look upon this as an opportunity to put themselves ahead of students from other school systems who will be out vegetating in the summer sun.

The fact that we are seniors has no bearing on our position. It is well known to all high school students, regardless of class standing, that seniors deserve every advantage they receive, including not having their shcool year extended by an extra week.
