2011 Citybeat Sampler

The previous year, I submitted a best-of sampler for review to San Diego Citybeat. This year, I had a new album coming out, so I selected three strong tracks from that and sent them in:

  1. 125%
  2. What's Stopping You?
  3. New World Man Blues
I also produced and played on a demo recording by The Epic Silence, and we sent in the three tracks we had in the can, so I was actually getting two reviews in the March 2, 2011 issue. The review of my CD is mainly interesting for what's not written. The reviewer includes some biographical information that was not part of the package I sent in. Obviously, he was intrigued enough to go to my web site and check me out. The band review sounds pretty lackluster, but whereas the reviewer obviously didn't like Santana, our lead guitarist did, so it was a compliment for him to be, at least in a review, keeping company with his hero. As far as "disjointed lyrics," I always felt that the writer's lyrics were his strength. Seems the reviewer just missed that.

RICK HINES
Demo

Rick Hines is an artist, writer and musician who makes music in his home studio. He's been cranking out recordings since the '80s, and you gotta give him props for his perseverance. I like the guitars. Lots of lo-fi atmosphere, but a bit disjointed in places. The cover of Rush's "New World Man" is the bright spot on the record. www.ricks-studio.com.

THE EPIC SILENCE
Demo

Consider this: Every Santana recording you've ever heard--every aimlessly structured song, every arbitrary burst of guitar noodling--is the man performing at his best. Now, can you imagine what his off days must sound like? Swap out Rob Thomas for a teenage boy droning disjointed lyrics like the second coming of Grace Slick and you'll have a pretty good idea of The Epic Silence.
