Integration II

Integration II

1983, 86, oil on canvas, 28" x 22"

This work, like Two Spheres, is an attempt to fuse (or integrate) my old realist style with a modern sense of the abstract. Although I would later find more subtle ways of blending the two, I like the way the simplified background throws the spotlight on the actual objects contained in the still life. My tendency to utilize surrealism is found in the lack of shadows cast by the objects on the ground contrasting nicely with the still life's literal realism. Contrasting imaginary compositional lines in the simplified areas also bring an unreality to the scene. All this serves to imprint my artistic qualities on an otherwise realist scene which highlights some of my best still life painting.
