Solid, Liquid, Gas: Three States of Clear Matter Viewed Against a White Background

Solid, Liquid, Gas: Three States of Clear Matter Viewed Against a White Background

1984, oil on canvas, 29" x 21"

By 1984, it was clear to me that my "style" was "no style" as I gleefully leaped from one concept to another; but I gradually realized that I did like to use a lot of saturated, bright colors. My approach to this painting was to try and go to the opposite extreme: paint something clear (a solid glass half full of liquid water and half full of gaseous air) against something white and see what happens. As it turned out, color crept in from reflections of the surrounding (dark) room in the form of touches of brown and blue, but basically this is my anticolor work.
